Jailed Ex-PM Imran Khan Appears Before Pakistan’s Top Court via Videolink
Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan made a virtual appearance before the Supreme Court through a videolink from prison. The court hearing, which took place on Thursday, was in connection with a case regarding amendments to the country’s anti-corruption law. This marks the first time Khan has appeared before the top court since his imprisonment in August 2023 on several charges.

The Unbroadcasted Court Appearance
Despite the significance of the event, the court appearance of the 71-year-old leader was not live-streamed on the top court’s website or aired on the country’s news channels. The lack of transparency raised questions, and broadcast, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar remained silent, leaving the public in the dark about the decision.
Political Implications
Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI) accused Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa of collusion with the government for not allowing the hearing to be broadcast. The PTI believes that the chief justice is aligned with the security establishment, and they aim to undermine the PTI in every possible manner. In Pakistan, the term “establishment” often refers to the powerful army, which has wielded significant political influence for nearly three decades.
Background: Amendments to Anticorruption Law
The case revolves around amendments made to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999. Shortly after Khan lost a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022, the succeeding government amended the law, limiting the powers of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Pakistan’s primary anti-corruption agency.
The changes stipulated that the NAB could not investigate a case unless the transactional value exceeded 500 million rupees ($6 million) or the number of “affected individuals” in a case surpassed 100. Additionally, the NAB must conclude trials within a year and present evidence before making an arrest. These amendments led to the withdrawal of at least 22 corruption-related cases from NAB courts, involving prominent figures such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani.

Imran Khan’s Petition
In July 2022, Imran Khan filed a petition in the Supreme Court, accusing the government of protecting “influential people” and legitimizing corruption through the amendments. He urged the court to scrap the changes, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in Pakistan’s governance.
The case continues to draw attention, and the virtual appearance of the ex-PM Imran Khan underscores the complexities of Pakistan’s political landscape. As the country grapples with power struggles and legal battles, the fate of its anticorruption efforts remains uncertain.
This article sheds light on the recent virtual court appearance of Imran Khan, the jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan. The lack of live broadcasting during the hearing raises questions about transparency and political motivations. The amendments to the anticorruption law and their impact on high-profile cases add further intrigue to this unfolding legal saga.
