AstraZeneca Admits Covid Vaccine Can Cause Rare Side Effects: Unveiling the Legal Battle
!AstraZeneca

In a groundbreaking development, AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical giant behind the Covishield vaccine, has made a startling admission in a UK court: their Covid vaccine can indeed cause rare side effects, including a condition known as Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS). This revelation comes after intense legal wrangling and could have far-reaching implications for both the company and those who have received the vaccine.
The Legal Battle Unfolds as AstraZeneca Admits
The class-action lawsuit against AstraZeneca alleges that their vaccine, developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford, led to deaths and serious injuries in several cases. Families affected by these adverse events have been seeking justice, and the first case was lodged by Jamie Scott, a father of two. Scott suffered a permanent brain injury after developing a blood clot and a brain bleed following vaccination in April 2021. His wife received three harrowing calls from the hospital, warning her that her husband might not survive.
The Rare Side Effect: TTS
TTS, or Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome, is a condition characterized by blood clots and a low blood platelet count. While extremely rare, it has had a devastating effect on a small number of families. AstraZeneca’s legal defence, submitted to the High Court in February, acknowledges that their vaccine can cause TTS in very rare cases. However, the causal mechanism remains unknown.
The Numbers and the Payout
Fifty-one cases have been lodged in the High Court, with victims and grieving relatives seeking damages estimated to be worth up to £100 million. AstraZeneca’s admission could pave the way for substantial legal payouts if the company accepts that the vaccine was the cause of serious illness and death in specific instances. The UK government has pledged to underwrite AstraZeneca’s legal bills, adding another layer of complexity to this legal saga.
Efficacy and Controversy
Lawyers argue that the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is “defective” and that its efficacy has been “vastly overstated”—claims that AstraZeneca vehemently denies. Scientists first identified a link between the vaccine and a new illness called vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) as early as March 2021, shortly after the COVID-19 vaccine rollout began.
The Way Forward
As the legal battle unfolds, questions remain. How will this admission impact public trust in vaccines? What measures will AstraZeneca take to address the rare side effects? And what does this mean for the global vaccination effort?

For now, the spotlight is on AstraZeneca, a company that has played a pivotal role in the fight against Covid-19. As the legal proceedings continue, the world watches closely, hoping for transparency, accountability, and a safer path forward.
