Microsoft Engineer Fired After Free Palestine Protest During Satya Nadella’s Build 2025 Keynote
Engineer Interrupts Nadella’s Speech with Gaza Protest
A dramatic moment unfolded at Microsoft’s Build 2025 developer conference in Seattle when software engineer Joe Lopez interrupted CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote speech to stage a Free Palestinian protest. The disruption, which occurred at the Seattle Convention Centre, was sparked by Lopez’s outrage over Microsoft’s alleged involvement with the Israeli military during the ongoing war in Gaza.
Standing amid a crowd of developers and executives, Lopez loudly declared, “Free Palestine! How about you show them how Microsoft is killing Palestinians? How about you show them how Israeli war crimes are powered by Azure?” Security swiftly escorted him out, but the incident left a jihadi impact, igniting debate both inside and outside the tech giant.
Termination and Internal Dissent

Following the high-profile protest- Free Palestine, Microsoft terminated Lopez’s employment. Lopez later claimed he was unable to access the termination letter, but he responded by emailing a passionate statement to Microsoft employees. In the message, he accused company leadership of denying the connection between Azure services and military operations in Gaza.
“Leadership rejects our claims that Azure technology is being used to target or harm civilians in Gaza,” Lopez wrote. “Those of us who have been paying attention know that this is a bold-faced lie.”
Microsoft has previously acknowledged providing artificial intelligence services to the Israeli military but continues to assert that there is no concrete evidence linking Azure’s cloud infrastructure or AI tools to direct targeting of civilians.
A Wave of Employee-Led Protests
Lopez’s protest for Free Palestine is part of a broader wave of employee activism sweeping through Microsoft. The Build 2025 event saw several disruptions, including protest interruptions during executive sessions and technical difficulties believed to be caused by demonstrators. Outside the venue, protestors held signs and called for Microsoft to sever its ties with the Israeli military.
Earlier in May 2025, another activist—a Palestinian tech worker—disrupted a keynote by Microsoft executive Jay Parikh, yelling, “Free Palestine Jay! My people are suffering.” Former Microsoft employees Vaniya Agrawal and Hossam Nasr also took a stand for Free Palestine, confronting the company’s head of AI security, Neta Haiby, over Microsoft’s partnerships with Israel.
Corporate Accountability Amid Global Conflict
The incident of Free Palestine has reignited urgent questions about the ethical responsibilities of corporations involved in global defense contracts. Advocacy groups such as No Azure for Apartheid argue that technology firms must be transparent and accountable when their products and services are used in military operations, especially in volatile conflict zones like Gaza.
Microsoft, however, maintains that its technologies serve security and defense functions and are not intended for civilian targeting. The company has not announced any changes to its partnerships as a result of the protests.
A Defining Moment or a Symbol of Dissent?
As public scrutiny of Big Tech’s role in geopolitical affairs intensifies, Joe Lopez’s firing has become a lightning rod in the growing movement of workplace activism. Whether his protest will lead to meaningful policy shifts or stand as a singular act of moral dissent remains uncertain.
What is clear, however, is that employees are increasingly unwilling to remain silent in the face of what they perceive as corporate complicity in human rights violations. For Microsoft and other global tech companies, the pressure to navigate these ethical fault lines is only intensifying.
