The Struggle for Quality Education: Unmasking Indian School System
!School
New Delhi, April 1, 2024 — India, a land of diverse cultures, languages, and traditions, has always revered education as the cornerstone of progress. Yet, beneath the grand facade of bustling classrooms and chalk-dusted blackboards lies a web of pressing issues that threaten the very essence of our education system.
The 33% Mirage: A Flawed Pass Mark in Indian School System
Across the nation, students toil day and night, their dreams pinned on securing that elusive 33%. But what does this seemingly innocuous number signify? It’s the minimum pass mark set by almost all Indian boards. However, the reality is far more complex. Schools, in their pursuit of reputation, craft separate policies—often veiled in secrecy—to manipulate student outcomes. A student scoring 45% in school may find their path to board exams blocked.
Numerous parents of students attending a well-reputed English Medium ICSE board-affiliated school in Park Circus, Kolkata, are voicing dissatisfaction and protest over the school’s arbitrary decision to prevent their children from taking the matriculation examination in the upcoming 2024-25 session, despite the students achieving marks above the passing threshold in nearly all subjects. This arbitrary act undermines the spirit of education, leaving countless bright minds in the shadows. Indian School System

The Devi Saraswati Paradox
In a country where education is revered as highly as the goddess Devi Saraswati herself, such practices are sacrilegious. The goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts would surely weep at the injustice meted out to students. Our schools, once temples of learning, now resemble factories churning out numbers rather than nurturing intellect. The very fabric of our nation frays when education becomes a privilege for the privileged.

The Beacon of Hope: National Education Policy 2020
Enter the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020—a beacon of hope for a beleaguered Indian School system. Crafted with the vision of universalizing education from preschool to secondary levels, the NEP aims to provide quality and equitable education for all. Let’s delve into its transformative aspects:
- Early Childhood Care and Education: The NEP emphasizes universal access to high-quality preschool education for children aged 3 to 6 years. The proposed 5+3+3+4 system integrates preschool with primary education, fostering holistic development.
- Flexible Curriculum: The NEP advocates for experiential learning and critical thinking. Vocational education at the secondary level opens alternative pathways for students.
- Higher Education Reforms: A multidisciplinary approach, research focus, and faculty empowerment are central to NEP’s vision for higher education.

The Missing Link: Implementation
Yet, Indian School System policy alone cannot mend the broken Indian School System. Schools must align with the NEP’s spirit. Why do some schools persist in their arbitrary ways? As Prime Minister Modi unites India, schools must join hands too. A formal policy, transparent and unwavering, is the need of the hour. Let’s ensure that every student, from the front row to the last bencher, feels the warmth of Devi Saraswati’s blessings. Only then can we truly ignite the flames of knowledge and propel our nation toward a brighter future.
