Boeing Whistleblower John Barnett Found Dead After Testifying Against the Company
John Barnett, a former Boeing employee known for his unwavering commitment to safety and quality, was found dead in the United States. His passing comes just days after he testified in a whistleblower lawsuit against the aviation giant.
The Life and Struggles of John Barnett
- Career at Boeing: Barnett dedicated 32 years of his life to Boeing, working primarily at the North Charleston plant where the cutting-edge 787 Dreamliner was manufactured. As a quality manager, he was deeply involved in ensuring the aircraft’s production met the highest standards.
- Raising Concerns: In 2019, Barnett courageously exposed discrepancies in production quality. He revealed that under pressure, workers were fitting sub-standard parts to aircraft on the production line. Additionally, he uncovered serious issues with oxygen systems, potentially rendering one in four breathing masks ineffective during emergencies.
- Whistleblower Lawsuit: Barnett’s revelations led to a whistleblower lawsuit against Boeing. He testified about the company’s practices, emphasizing safety concerns and compromised assembly processes. His testimony shed light on the challenges faced by those striving to maintain safety standards.
The Tragic End
- Self-Inflicted Wound: On March 9, 2024, John Barnett was found dead in his truck in a hotel parking lot in South Carolina. The Charleston County coroner confirmed that the cause of death was a “self-inflicted” wound.
- Legal Battle: Even after retiring, Barnett continued his fight. He accused Boeing of denigrating his character and hindering his career due to the safety issues he raised. Boeing vehemently denied these charges.
- Last Testimony: Just days before his death, Barnett gave a formal deposition in the ongoing legal battle. He faced questioning from Boeing’s lawyers and cross-examination by his counsel.
Boeing’s Response
Boeing expressed sadness upon hearing of Mr. Barnett’s passing. The company’s history with him was marked by tension, but his commitment to safety remains a testament to the importance of whistleblowers in maintaining industry integrity.
John Barnett’s legacy will endure as a reminder that speaking up for safety and accountability is both courageous and necessary.
