Schools worldwide follow a particular trend based on various research, academic journals, and own experiences. Many new trends and practices come in and old ones go out, however, few things remain unchanged in schooling.

But nowadays Model United Nations (MUN) Simulation is catching the attention of many elite schools all across India, especially in metropolitan areas.

MUN Simulation is an academic model /simulation of UNO to help students understand various global issues relevant to the current scenario.

And one of the major skills students are able to achieve is leadership quality.

Other areas of improvement are public speaking, debating, writing, critical thinking, and teamwork. Needless to say, such programs boost the confidence level of students in facing diverse situations.

International Coverage

In general educational institutions or schools/colleges initiate to organize such events at the institutional level or inter-school or college level.

The higher level may go up to the international arena where students of various countries sit together to run international simulations of UNO proceedings.

Major Topics of International Model United Nations

The organizing institutions select the relevant but current topics from within issues raised in United Nations Forum and it is selected based on the country’s priorities on any issue.

The event runs for one to three days and is subject to the number of participants attending as delegates of the meeting and the number of committees formed to undertake various UN proceedings as per UN rules.

The most interesting part is that all the proceedings are done the same as the UN follows in its meetings. Like the election of the President of the general assembly, the appointment of the Secretary-General, or the proceeding of various UN bodies and conducting votes on particular issues.

Students participating as delegates get the opportunity to learn many pertinent issues of the world and how such issues are affecting society at large.

Learning

Various protocols are adopted and it helps students learn diplomacy, international working culture, and knowledge of how government or parliament are run. The concept of democracy is also part of learning for students.

Some of the topics are evergreen and the first choice of students including environment, peace, and conflicts.

Topics from millennium development goals and new sets of sustainable development goals are also considered for discussion.

One of the international Model United Nations events that were held at Saraswati World School, Hooghly, in eastern India is focusing on the environment, peace & conflict resolution, human rights, global citizen education, and education for all.

In a nutshell, the MUN simulation event gives a different level of experience to students which helps the young mind to think beyond the classroom.
