One of Iran’s most popular actresses has been arrested days after she criticized the execution of a man who took part in nationwide protests that have spread across the country since September 2022.
Taraneh Alidoosti, who starred in the 2016 Oscar-winning film ‘The Salesman‘, has condemned the hanging of Mohsen Shekari, who was killed this month in the first known execution linked to the raids. protest. Shekari is said to be found guilty of “war against God” for stabbing a member of the Basij paramilitary force during a protest in Tehran on September 23.
State media outlet Fars News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Alidoosti was arrested due to a “lack of evidence to support her claims”.
Known as a feminist, Taraneh Alidoosti posted a photo of herself on Instagram last month without a Muslim hijab and holding a whitepaper reading “Women, Life, Freedom” to show her support for the ongoing protest movement.
After Shekari was executed, she said in another post:
“Your silence means supporting dictatorships and tyrants,” adding that “any international organization that watches this bloodbath and fails to act, is a disgrace to mankind.”

Last month, she denied reports that she had left Iran, writing that she planned to stay in the country and stop working.
“I will stand with the families of the prisoners and those who lost their lives to seek justice for them. I will fight for my home and pay any price to protect my rights,” she wrote.
