Looking ahead, Maggie Civantos appears in 28 of the 51 episodes spanning four seasons of the series. Furthermore, she is set to star in the recently announced spin-off, “Vis a Vis: El Oasis,” alongside the character Zulema (played by Najwa Nimri) and other fan favorites.

In Season 1, the story revolves around Macarena’s adjustment to prison life, her quest to prove her innocence, and her accidental discovery of the location of €9 million, which leads to a series of troubles. Macarena, initially portrayed as a naive and trusting woman, repeatedly finds herself in precarious situations due to accidents or being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Since the money is outside the prison, Macarena’s family becomes entangled with Zulema’s boyfriend, known as “The Egyptian” (Adryen Mehdi), in a deadly battle over the cash. Macarena’s brother Román (played by Daniel Ortiz) and her parents, Leopoldo (played by Carlos Hipólito) and Encarna (played by María Salgueiro), go to great lengths to recover the money, eliminate the Egyptian, prove Macarena’s innocence, and ensure the safety of their family. Inspector Castillo (played by Jesús Castejón) relentlessly pursues them throughout the season.

Curly (Berta Vázquez) quickly becomes infatuated with Macarena upon her arrival at the prison, and although Macarena initially resists, the two eventually develop a romantic relationship.

The ensemble cast includes Macarena’s father, Fabio the guard (played by Roberto Enríquez), and the prison governor (played by Cristina Plazas), whose character evolves from a liberal stance to a more authoritarian one in response to several critical events.

Other notable prisoners in the series include Zulema, Anabel the drug dealer (played by Inma Cuevas), Sole (played by María Isabel Díaz Lago), Saray (played by Alba Flores), Antonia the troublemaker (played by Laura Baena), and the drug addict Tere (played by Marta Aledo).

Dr. Sandoval (played by Ramiro Blas), a creepy character with an unhealthy obsession with Macarena, adds depth to the story.

The show incorporates elements of documentary-style interviews with prisoners speaking directly to the camera about their lives. These interviews are a distinctive feature of “Locked Up (Vis a vis).”

While the plot occasionally stretches credibility, the series keeps viewers engaged with its unexpected turns and surprises. It offers moments of danger, violence, love, friendship, and abuse, portraying a wide range of characters among both prisoners and guards. The language used is gritty and appropriate to the prison setting, and there is a significant amount of nudity.

Fans of dramatic Spanish series, particularly those with a penchant for melodrama, will find “Locked Up (Vis a vis)” appealing. The series shares similarities with shows like “Orange is the New Black” and “Wentworth” due to its women’s prison drama theme. However, it also stands out as a unique creation in its own right.
