Israel Strikes Southern Lebanon, Hezbollah Retaliates with Rocket Barrage
Israel Launches Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon
On Sunday, August 25, 2024, the Israeli military force launched a series of airstrikes targeting sites in southern Lebanon. The attacks were focused on the areas of Marjayoun, Hasbaya, and Shebaa Farms near the border with Israel.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the strikes were carried out to “preempt an imminent attack” by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The IDF claimed that Hezbollah was planning to launch anti-tank missiles at northern Israeli towns and villages.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the airstrikes successfully thwarted Hezbollah’s plans and that Israel would continue to take action to ensure the security of its citizens.
Hezbollah Fires Over 50 Rockets into Israel
In response to the airstrikes, Hezbollah launched more than 50 rockets into the Golan Heights on Sunday afternoon. The rockets hit several private homes in the area, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
A 30-year-old man was moderately wounded by shrapnel in the attack and was treated by first responders. Hezbollah claimed the rocket barrage was in retaliation for the strikes on southern Lebanon earlier in the day.
Ongoing Tensions and Escalation Fears
The latest exchange of attacks between Israel and Hezbollah marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border. Since the start of war against Hamas in Gaza in October 2023, the two sides have engaged in near-daily skirmishes that have killed over 500 people in Lebanon and 49 in Israel.
Diplomatic efforts led by the United States, France, and the United Nations are underway to prevent the situation from spiralling into a full-scale war. However, both Israel and Hezbollah have signalled their willingness to continue fighting if necessary.
Hezbollah has aligned its actions with Hamas, stating that it will stop attacking Israel if a ceasefire is reached in Gaza. Israel, on the other hand, has not ruled out further military action in Lebanon if diplomatic solutions fail.
The ongoing violence has taken a heavy toll on civilians, with many expressing exhaustion and a desire for peace. The United Nations has issued evacuation orders to tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, marking one of the most extensive mandates since a similar directive in October 2023.
As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community is urging both sides to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions to prevent further loss of life and destruction in the region.
