The European Union (EU) is expected to level a formal warning against X, the Elon Musk-owned social media network formerly known as Twitter. The reason? X has allegedly failed to combat dangerous content effectively, according to a Bloomberg report.

The Digital Services Act (DSA) and Transparency Obligations

The DSA of the European Union obligates online platforms to be more transparent about how they collect data and outlines procedures for dealing with illegal content and disinformation. In this context, the European Union has stepped up its enforcement efforts against big tech companies, including the enactment of the DSA and the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Potential Violation and Consequences

European Union

Thierry Breton, Internal Market Commissioner of the EU enforcement arm (the European Commission), is expected to announce a potential violation of the DSA by X. If confirmed, this violation could result in a fine of up to 6% of X’s revenue if the platform doesn’t return to compliance. The warning serves as a signal that the EU is closely monitoring tech companies’ adherence to regulations and their efforts to combat harmful content.

Other Recent European Union Actions Against Big Tech

This move against X is part of a broader trend. The European Commission recently accused Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) of violating the DMA through its “pay or consent” advertising practices on Instagram and Facebook. Additionally, Apple faced its own DMA violation charge for restricting how developers can seek payments. Microsoft, too, received a warning related to potential EU antitrust rules violations for bundling Teams with its Office products.

Conclusion

As the European Union continues to scrutinize tech giants, X finds itself in the spotlight. The warning underscores the importance of responsible content moderation and transparency in the digital landscape. Whether X can address these concerns effectively remains to be seen.
