BAPS Swaminarayan Temple Vandalized in New York: Indian Consulate Condemns ‘Heinous Anti-India Graffiti’
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville, New York, was vandalized on Monday with hateful messages inscribed on the driveway and the temple’s sign outside the gate. The Indian Consulate General in New York strongly condemned the incident, calling it “unacceptable” and raising the matter with U.S. law enforcement authorities for prompt action against the perpetrators.

“The vandalism of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Melville, New York, is unacceptable; The Consulate @IndiainNewYork is in touch with the community and has raised the matter with U.S. law enforcement authorities for prompt action against the perpetrators of this heinous act,” the consulate said in a post on X.
BAPS Swaminarayan Temple and Khalistani Terrorists
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has urged the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the attack on BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, stating that it comes after recent threats to Hindu institutions as a large Indian community gathering is planned in nearby Nassau County this weekend. HAF pointed to a recent video posted by Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, in which he threatened Hindu and Indian institutions.
“Gurpatwant Pannun, of “Sikhs for Justice,” recently posted a video threatening Hindu and Indian institutions, including HAF, as the community event approaches. The vandalism is similar to that seen in attacks on temples in New York, California and Canada & called out by @CongressmanRaja @RoKhanna @ShriThanedar @PramilaJayapal @BeraForCongress @shuvmajumdar and other political leaders,” HAF posted on X.
An act of cowardice
Suhag Shukla, executive director of the Hindu American Foundation, called the act “absolute cowardice” aimed at “airing hatred for an elected leader” and said the recent attacks at Hindu and Indian institutions must be seen in the context of the threat scenario.
This is not the first time that BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir has been targeted. Similar incidents were reported a few months ago in Edmonton, Canada, where a Hindu temple was defaced with anti-India graffiti threatening Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya.
The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) strongly condemned the attack and said it is working with the authorities to support their investigation into this alleged “hate crime”. BAPS spiritual leader Mahant Swami Maharaj has offered prayers for peace and harmony.
Major Concern
The vandalism has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the Hindu community in the U.S. and the broader implications of these hate crimes. As the investigation into the incident continues, the Hindu American Foundation and the Indian Consulate have called for swift action against the perpetrators and a commitment to ensuring the protection of religious freedom and diversity in the United States.
