Moses Netflix – A Docudrama That Strives for Universality
Testament The Story of Moses
Netflix’s latest docudrama series, “Testament: The Story of Moses,” delves into the life of one of history’s most iconic figures. With the unexpected success of Dallas Jenkins’ “The Chosen,” which focused on the life of Jesus, the entertainment industry has turned its gaze toward faith-based projects. However, does Testament manage to break free from the traditional mold of religious epics? Let’s explore.
The Journey of Moses Unfolds
The miniseries spans three 80-minute episodes, each narrating a crucial phase in Moses’ life. From his princely upbringing in Egypt to his flight to the land of Midian after a fatal altercation with an Egyptian taskmaster, the first episode, “The Prophet,” sets the stage. “The Plagues” follows Moses’ relentless efforts to persuade Pharaoh to release the Hebrews, accompanied by the divine calamities that befall Egypt. Finally, “The Promised Land,” despite its somewhat misleading title (since Moses never reaches Canaan), portrays the Israelites’ crossing of the Red Sea and culminates in the delivery of the Ten Commandments.
Visuals and Production Values
The production values evoke a sense of déjà vu for those familiar with The Chosen. While not extravagant, they are certainly an improvement. Netflix wisely allocates resources to create visually satisfying effects for the plagues and the iconic Red Sea crossing. However, my one quibble lies with the casting: the actor portraying Moses appears a good forty years too young.

A Serious Historical Documentary or a Dramatization?
Testament The Story of Moses Netflix
Testament ambitiously straddles the line between dramatization and serious historical documentary. The showrunners intersperse interviews with supposed experts between scenes. These experts include Tom Kang, a lead pastor from Los Angeles, and liberal Bible scholar Peter Enns, who offers the Christian perspective on Moses. The series also features Jewish rabbis and Muslim teachers, providing their unique viewpoints. The syncretic approach attempts to harmonize the three Abrahamic religions’ interpretations of Moses, but it occasionally glosses over significant differences of opinion.

The Quest to Humanize Testament The Story of Moses Netflix
“Testament” aims to demystify Moses, stripping away the superhuman aura that often surrounds him. By presenting him as a multifaceted individual—prince, prophet, liberator, and lawgiver—the series humanizes this towering biblical figure. It’s a commendable endeavour, especially in a genre where divine intervention often overshadows the humanity of characters.
Final Thoughts on Testament The Story of Moses Netflix
“Testament: The Story of Moses” is a worthy addition to the growing collection of faith-based content. While it doesn’t break new ground, it does provide a fresh perspective on Moses. Whether you’re a believer or a sceptic, this docudrama invites you to explore the man behind the miracles.
In the end, perhaps the true testament lies in our ability to see beyond the supernatural and connect with the human struggles that shape our shared history.
